News: Chequered Flag version 0.1.0 released

The first version of the Formula One Grand Prix/World Circuit (F1GP/WC) editor Chequered Flag has been released for public usage after a significant development period. The program can be downloaded here, while the homepage for the project can be reached at this location.

For version 0.1.0, the focus was the track editor and the development team has made steps in ensuring that Chequered Flag is the most advanced track editor for F1GP/WC to date. Some issues still remain however; the largest of which is the inaccuracy of the CC-Line generation on the track map. This issue is a priority for fixing and the development team is aware of how to achieve this. Version 0.1.1 or 0.1.2 can be expected to be free of this problem.

There is much left to do in ensuring that Chequered Flag becomes as close to the complete F1GP/WC editor as it was originally designed to be. This will be addressed in the coming months with a series of more rapid and incremental updates than have been seen to date. As always though, Chequered Flag is short of developers and anybody which wishes to work on the project would be gratefully received in either a long or short-term role. No significant obligations will be required of any new developer.

Finally of all, I would like to visit all visitors to this site who celebrate this holiday period, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
File: Chequered Flag (Binary Release)

Chequered Flag is an open-source editor for Formula One Grand Prix/World Circuit (F1GP/WC). At present, it provides facilities for track editing, although more comprehensive modification facilities can be expected in the future. This is the binary release, the source release can be found on the Chequered Flag homepage if required.

[ Size: 100.0 KB, File Type: Game Editor, Game: Microprose F1GP ]

News: Latest Community News

It's been a busy month in the world of F1GP/WC, with plenty of developments of interest to the community as a whole.

The most significant of these relates to the multiplayer capability of the game itself. Up until now, Internet gameplay using F1GP/WC has been a virtual impossibility, as no real network code exists in the game for establishing remote real-world connections. However, one potential option to resolve this is to use a serial emulation tool which routes the data over TCP/IP rather than across a real cable. Although this solution has been apparent for many years, nobody to my knowledge has actually tried it.

However, some new developments in the Dosbox community have finally rendered serial emulation which is fully compatible with F1GP/WC. I have myself managed to connect two copies of the game on the same computer, and then to other computers across both a LAN and a wireless network. The game worked perfectly in each case, without any problems whatsoever. Therefore, it is now fair to say that F1GP/WC can now run perfectly over any kind of home network connection and is no longer limited to any of the game supported methods.

In terms of Internet connectivity, I have not yet been able to establish if the game will work just as well over such a connection. The principle difference between Internet and local network connections is the lag time between the two gaming hosts. In my local network tests, I did not have a lag time higher than 3ms, which is easily fast enough to deal with the maximum 25 frames a second used by F1GP/WC. However, even the fastest Internet connections will have significantly more lag and this may prove a problem for the game. According to my rough calculations, I believe the game would be totally unplayable at anything over 125ms of lag. For reasonable performance at about 20fps, a lag of around 50ms would be much better. The latter category sounds achievable on broadband connections for users in the same geographical region. I'll know more about this after I've done some testing.

To achieve the connection with Dosbox, I had to use a specially patched version of the CVS code (essentially the newest code submitted by the developers). For now, I have only been able to build a Linux binary copy of the emulator, but I do intend to have a Windows binary built soon. When I do, I'll send my copy to somebody else and try to test the game over the Internet. Then I'll have a better idea of how reliable Internet gaming will be and can post more information here.

In other developments, the programming work on Chequered Flag is now essentially completed and the final touches are being added to the editor. This essentially amounts to bug-fixing at this stage and around 75% of this work has already been done. There are two or three more things that have been identified and need to be corrected before release. After that, version 0.1.0 of the editor will be made available to the public and we will then work towards 0.1.1. I think the plan in the future is to improve little and often, so incremental releases can be expected more frequently afterwards.

Finally, I have recently been updating the F1GP/WC Wikipedia page to bring the entry in line with current community developments. With thanks to John, who also independently made his own revisions, I believe the page is now much more representative of the current affairs relating to the game. If anybody is interested in reading more about F1GP/WC in general, please feel free to visit the Wikipedia page here

As previously promised, I've uploaded a number of screenshots demonstrating the new F1GP/WC editor Chequered Flag. The screenshots can be found on the Chequered Flag homepage here. I've noticed a rather significant up-surge in the amount of traffic received on the editor homepage since I last posted news, so I know there are quite a few people interested in the editor itself :)

For those who are, progress is still continuing towards finishing and then releasing the first version of the editor. I'll post more news about this as the project advances. In the meantime, feel free to post messages in the forum here at Simracingworld, or on the Chequered Flag forums. All queries, suggestions and general conversation regarding the editor will be welcome.

News: First version of Chequered Flag coming soon

Despite the lack of any recent news on the Chequered Flag project (a new editor in development for F1GP), rest assured that progress is still being made. In fact, we are nearing the end of the current development stretch and will release version 0.10 of the program in the near future. Although this promise has been made in the past, there are only two main things now left to implement before the editor can be released. Klaus believes he will have his code completed by mid-September and I will be finished with mine long before then.

The first release will support the editing of tracks, in a similiar way to TrackEd, but with a better and more usable interface. After this segment has been completed, the development of a game editor itself will begin to take shape. The implementation of a new online competition management system will also be included in the program and track editing improvements will be made. We will also consider any other suggestions made by the community for inclusion into the editor.

To keep up with the latest Chequered Flag news and be involved in the project, feel free to visit the website located here and use any of the interactive project facilities available. Over the next week or so, I will implement one of the two features and then release some screenshots of the editor for you to view. After Klaus has implemented the last feature, the editor will be ready for the first release.

Well, it's been a while since the last news post here :) In all honestly, the last three months have been fairly quiet in the F1GP scene. In addition, the tight time schedules of the developers have meant that progress with Chequered Flag has been relatively slow too. However, I personally will have significantly increased time after the next month or so to commit to the project. So more rapid progress and finally a release can be expected in the summer :)

Not too much to report at present, but just thought I'd keep you all up to date on the situation :)

News: Improved F1GP Theme Tune Uploaded

I've uploaded a new F1GP theme tune copy in MP3 format. My motivations for this was listening to a previous version submitted by John about five years ago. Although there was nothing much wrong with the previous upload, it was too quiet when compared to other mp3 files. So I've created a new copy by extracting the audio from Dosbox, resampling and then normalising the volume. So now there is a near perfect rendition of the original theme tune available for your listening pleasures :)

News: Significant Chequered Flag News

There has been a major new development in the Chequered Flag project which promises much for the future. A third developer has joined on a part-time basis, and the individual is none other than Rene Smit, co-developer of Gp2lap and Gpxpatch as well as numerous other past software projects. More information on this new significant development is available on the Chequered Flag website. The news page for this site can be reached here

In other developments, I came across a few tools and some game content this week on other sites, some that I hadn't seen previously on the F1GP/WC section of the Simracingworld website. Of those which are not available here, most of the functionality found in the tools can be achieved by using some of the major editors on this site. However, I found two files that I deemed relevant to upload here. Therefore, the following files are now available.

Backgrnd - An editor for changing the backgrounds of F1GP/WC tracks. Available here

1996 Game Helmets - A set of helmets for the game menu based on Silverstone 1996. Available here

I'll update this news page as more information is available on all F1GP fronts.
News: Chequered Flag progress

It's been a few weeks since any progress reports regarding the F1GP/WC editor Chequrered Flag have been released. So I thought I'd update you all on the situation :)

I've been busy for the last few weeks for various reasons and haven't had much time to commit to the project. But Klaus has done some excellent work on the track map, so things are moving along quite nicely. We now have a good viewing capability for F1GP/WC tracks and the editing capability will not be too difficult to implement. In a week or two, I should additionally be able to pick up my role in the project again. So things are looking up.

Klaus and I recently discussed releasing an initial version of the editor as a track viewing tool without the capability to change anything in order to demostrate the development progress. But we eventually decided that this wasn't worth doing as the resulting release would not of been much use to current F1GP/WC fans. Therefore, we have decided to go along with the original idea of releasing the first version of the editor when it becomes functional as a track editor. We hope to reach this stage in less than three months.

For now though, Klaus and I have decided we'll release a set of screenshots to show you all how the editor looks. I'll post some more news when I add them to the Chequered Flag website. Expect to see this in a week or two :)

News: F1GP news posts

I feel that the news system being used at Simracingworld doesn't actually make the posting of latest community news very obvious. So just as a investigation, could everybody who regularly follows what happens in the F1GP community post a message in the thread I have created to discuss this. The thread is located inside the F1GP forum. I'm interested to find out if the news system, or the forum is the location that attracts first interest and therefore which is best to post requests or queries :)

The forums can be found here. Thanks to all those who respond :)

News: F1GP 2004 documentation volunteer

Would anybody here be willing to write some documentation for F1GP 2004? I unfortunately don't have time and the original author has no plans to work on it any further. I would like to link the file from the original server to Simracingworld, as I believe it's an excellent contribution to the F1GP community. However, I don't want to do it without documentation because the program has some undocumented problems.

I can provide email exchanges between myself and the author which details the relevant problems. I would also be willing to respond to any queries anybody would have about the task, both before and during the task.

The author is also willing to turn over the package development to anybody who is interested. If anybody wants to take it on in addition to the documentation, that would be great :)

If you wish to contribute, please feel free to leave a message inside the apropriate forum thread located in the F1GP forum. All forums can be found here. I can also be reached at the following address.

&#98&#97&#114&#114&#105&#101&#64&#115&#105&#109&#114&#97&#99&#105&#110&#103&#119&#111&#114&#108&#100&#46&#99&#111&#109

Thanks to anybody who responds.

News: F1GP 2004 available

I have been notified by the owner of a fellow Formula One racing site that he has put together a special version of F1GP including the full game patched to the 2004 season, a DOS emulator and a number of apropriate tools and addon utilities for the game. These are all packaged into an archive with an installation front-end, and is therefore very easy to install onto any Windows system. It is designed for use by novice users who do not want to get involved in the more technical nature of configuring the DOS emulator manually along with the game itself. I have personally tested this and had no problem with the initial installation and game running.

I feel I should however provide one warning for the benefit of the users on this site before anybody attempts to try this combinational package. Although the packaged game used does have a small number of bugs, they are mainly only minor and not worth significant consideration. However, there is one problem that is indeed extremely important and will affect the running of the game on some systems. Upon my attempt to run the game, I noticed that it played extremely poorly and was obviously defective in some way. After examining the problem, I noticed that the CPU cycles assigned to the DOS emulator was far larger than my processors was capable of handling, resulting in jerky gameplay and corrupted sound. I managed to adjust this by means of the DOS emulator speed controls, but the reason or method of achieving this would not be apparent to the novice user. Therefore, I believe this package is unlikely to prove useful for a fair number of computer users, particularly those with computers below 2 gigahertz in speed.

My thanks go to Florian Jesse for his work on this package. In addition, Florian has no desire to work any further on the package in the future. He has therefore offered to allow anybody else to continue and improve upon what he has done if they wish to do so. This is a generous offer, and I hope somebody in the community will be interested in doing this. If anybody is, would it be possible for them to contact me. I'll then provide starting details for those who want to work further on this project. It is my hope that the speed issue previously noted can be fixed and the other minor bugs with the package resolved. Then we'll have an easily installed F1GP package for both novice and experienced users to enjoy at will :)

The F1GP 2004 package can be found here hosted by www.grand-prix.4players.de. My thanks to them for storing this package.
