Something that I spotted on another F1GP forum which may improve game play:-

I was fanatical about trying to tweak the settings for my car and the CC to arrive at the best competitive balance possible. But try as I might, the player car was always ridiculously more efficient at braking. While the CC always hit the binders at about the 150 meter mark, I could wait another 50-70 meters and pass them with ease. THEN I discovered that if I shifted my brake balance way to the front, my braking efficiency was degraded to the point that I had to start slowing down at about the 150 sign, just like the CC! After that, I enjoyed several seasons of white knuckles and sweaty palms.

Something you might like to try.
