An article describing what source code is and what is available.

By James Knopp
1 January 2002

Introduction

Back in 1998 Paul Hoad, who created JAM Editor, Car Editor and Object Editor, released the source code for all three utilities in an effort to get more people involved in the editing of GP2 and so that more could be done with the utilities. The source code was released as Open Source by which any code that is used within the utlity that is Paul's is still entirely his and copyrighted by him, but other users who are able to add to the program were free to do so and their code is their own. These utilities were built using Visual C++. In case you haven't figured it out, the language used is C++, a very powerful language and a choice language for many application. The majority of programs and games you use are most likely to have been programmed one way or another using C++. Since the release of these 3 utilities there have been a few more programs released by various programmers.

This article will let you know what is available to you in terms of Open Source and it will give you an insight about what you need and where you can get it. It will also let you know about the langauges used, and give you information where you can learn more about it.
